Kookaburra’s responsibility as the National Musical Theatre Company is to explore, develop and support new initiatives in musical theatre.
• Practical support for the creators of musical theatre, at every stage
• A script assessment service
• Forums and workshops for aspiring and established performers and creators
• An avenue for writers and creatives to develop and create new works for professional production.
• Commissioning Australian talent
• Partnering with educational institutions and other performing arts schools to provide vocational experience in musical theatre. For example, work experience secondments in Kookaburra productions.
• Working towards establishing an ‘umbrella’ programme of independent musical theatre productions and providing marketing and/or other support.
• Continuing to seek new ways to support the ongoing development of our national industry.
In 2007, The Nest mentored over 15 new composers’ work.
In 2008, The Nest will launch ‘5 in 10’. This project will take 5 new Australian musicals and bring them to life over 10 days. Each musical will have two days exploration with a different director and five professional actors. We will conduct ‘5 in 10’ twice throughout the year.
